Arrived ahead of schedule . .

at the Helsinki airport.  It was hard to believe that it was 8:30AM given the dark sky.  Pia and Harri fetched us from the airport and are graciously hosting us for the the week.

We settled into the guest house and had a lovely Christmas day.   We started with a walk around the neighborhood -- good thing we know how to walk on ice!  It's a necessary skill here in Scandinavia.

The evergreen and birch trees are spectacular!

Pia and Sarah standing in front of a glacial boulder which are scattered around.  Pia mentioned the determined Finns would move them to create farmland.

We enjoyed some of Pia and Harri's favorite Christmas dishes for lunch, then visited with Pia's uncle, aunt and Pia's mother.  Pia's uncle had researched our family history and provided us with copies of his research the Kuuttila family.

In the traditional Finnish style, we then had coffee and pulla (nissu), the best "fruit cake" we've ever tasted and enjoyed a wonderful conversation with their family.

Pia's uncle had spent time researching our family history and brought copies of his findings..

Harri worked hard to help us overcome our jet lag by showing us photos of Ylistaro (the town our family is from), Kuhmo (where they have a summer and winter home) and a bit of Helsinki, until Mom had fallen asleep on their chair one too many times.

Eetu has grown so tall!

Peeling spilled wax off their beautiful table cloth.  Another Finnish tradition?

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.
